3D technology applied to Dental Implants

With more than 700,000 implant placements a year, Spain is the world leader in this technology that reduces patient fear, pain and inflammation, thanks to the study and previous diagnosis through three-dimensional images.

New technologies and computer programs allow three-dimensional images of the mouth and mouthparts to be obtained in great detail. On these three-dimensional images, dentists can work as if it were the same mouth, so that they can study, diagnose and plan comfortably (both for themselves and for the patient) the dental treatment that they will apply.

Thanks to a CT scan and specialized computer program, three-dimensional images of each patient are obtained. Once the images are available, the doctors study the best possibility and then apply the technique that suits the specific needs of each case, which improves the effectiveness of the implant position, reduces the intervention time, and minimizes inflammation. after the operation and allows the placement of the teeth at the moment.

We interview one of the pioneers in using this technique, Dr. Eduardo Ausín.

Very Interesting: What is the main novelty in 3D dental images?

Dr. Ausin: The main novelty is that these new technologies allow us to simulate in advance the treatment and the results that can be obtained in each case.

What are the steps to follow to carry out this system?

Dr. Ausin: In a synthetic way, the steps of this technique are: performing a CT scan, planning the treatment on the three-dimensional image in the computer, taking the model of the patient's mouth, making a splint or guide to locate the the holes through which the drills and implants must pass and, finally, the intervention.

What are the advantages of this technique?

Dr. Ausin: Mainly two. From a technical point of view, it allows us to place the most suitable implants in the most appropriate position. In addition, it is not necessary to make incisions in the gum, they allow to place teeth in the same day and improve the aesthetic results. From the patient's point of view, it improves their comfort. The intervention can be reduced to a few minutes and the postoperative period is almost non-existent, there is hardly any inflammation or pain.

What are you waiting for
back to smile?

We focus on the best treatment with implants to resolve the issues that occur when you lose teeth, so that our patients not only get a profit professional but also emotional.

Does this mean that this technique avoids having to do surgery?

Indeed, since we know in advance where exactly the implants must be placed. It is enough to make a small hole in the gum, where the implant passes, so it is not necessary to give stitches. Medically known as «minimally invasive surgery«. By knowing the positions in which the implants will be, sometimes, teeth can be made, which will be placed at the end of the implant fixation. The patient leaves with implants and a few teeth on the same day.

Can it be applied to anyone?

Dr. Ausin: In principle there are no medical contraindications. Undoubtedly, it is especially indicated for some patients, such as those who take anticoagulant medication or, for example, when many implants have to be placed or in complex situations such as lack of bone, etc.

Do you have any complications?

Dr. Ausin: One of the main advantages is that it reduces the possible complications that can occur in the placement of implants with the traditional technique.

That cost has?

Dr. Ausin: Its price depending on the number of implants and the type of splint necessary to guide us in the intervention.
