Replace a lost tooth: aesthetics or health

When losing a tooth, the first thing we think about is our aesthetics. Logically the aesthetic impact is very important but, a lost tooth also means a problem for our oral health.

Tooth gap problems

When a tooth is lost, there is a space in the bone that must be replaced, as they can cause serious problems in our bite and in the other teeth.

Resorption or loss of bone

The space left by a lost tooth causes resorption (or loss) of the bone in the area and, when this occurs, movements of the other teeth and misalignment of the bite occur.

Unwanted movements of the teeth

This occurs because the teeth tend to rearrange for that space that has been left.

In the case of the teeth on the sides, they will tend to close this space and, the upper or lower (depending on the tooth that has been lost), will tend to come out up or down.

Bite problems

The problem that results from these unwanted movements of the teeth is that the occlusion will also change, that is, the way the teeth engage when biting.

Wear, fractures, or loss of teeth

When you do not have a correct occlusion, wear of the teeth, fractures, problems in the temporomandibular joint and, even, the loss of other teeth can occur.

Aesthetic problems

As you can see, the space left by a lost tooth can bring many complications. In any case, there will be an aesthetic problem to be solved as well, either because of the space that was left or because of everything that will happen later with our smile, due to the movement of the teeth.

Logically, when a movement of the teeth occurs, the smile will also change and, it is possible, that our face can also be affected by modifying our bite.

Conclusions and recommendations

For all these reasons, we can conclude that a lost tooth should be replaced for both aesthetics and health.

Keep in mind that when you lose a tooth, it is important to replace it as soon as possible, bearing in mind that it will initiate a process of bone resorption. If you want to perform a dental implant treatment and the bone has been lost you will first require an additional bone graft treatment.
