As a general rule you should change your toothbrush at least every 3 months or earlier, if it is in poor condition. If you had Covid-19 it is advisable to change it after the contagious phase.
Why should the toothbrush be changed?
As the toothbrush is in contact with our saliva, it tends to store viruses and bacteria that are in it. In addition to this, a toothbrush with worn bristles can be counterproductive for our oral health.
As we mentioned before, it is recommended to make the maximum change every 3 months.
Accumulation of bacteria and viruses
There is really no concrete evidence yet of how long the Covid-19 virus can remain on the surface of a toothbrush, or if it can generate a recontagion. But, in the face of viruses, it is always better to prevent.
For this, it is recommended make the brush change against Covid and against any virus that spreads through saliva particles. Infections in the throat or mouth, or a bad flu are also an alert to change the toothbrush.
Contact with others
It is common to have a single container at home to hold all the toothbrushes, but this is bad practice.
Remember that, as we have just indicated, the brush accumulates bacteria and viruses, and being in the same container an exchange of these is generated in all the brushes. It is recommended, as a minimum:
- Maintain each brush in a separate place.
- Handwashing before and after brushing your teeth.
- Disinfect the brush after use (including the brush handle) and dry it.
- Have your own toothpaste, to avoid residual saliva residues when smearing it on the brush.

Natural brush wear
Generally, it is thought of changing the toothbrush when the bristles are already in very bad condition. This is a serious error.
The bristles of the brush have a useful time, they wear out and will not fulfill their cleaning function properly. On the contrary, if the sows are in very bad condition, can damage tooth enamel, which is its protective layer, and can cause gum injuries.
In addition to all of the above, it is always advisable to prevent and receive advice from your dentist to avoid problems with your oral health.
We suggest you schedule your regular general check-up appointments with the dentist every 6 months and ask for all the recommendations to perform your correct oral hygiene.
