Bruxism: problems with your teeth and jaw

Due to stress we can suffer from unconscious clenching of teeth while we sleep or even during the day. This is known as Bruxism and, when it is constant, it can cause many problems with the teeth and jaw.

Tooth damage and problems

  • Wear of teeth and enamel loss.
  • Cracks on the teeth.
  • Fractures of the teeth.

In addition to these problems, more severe cases such as loss of one or more teeth. When a tooth is fractured or cracked, bacteria can enter and cause cavities or damage the tooth completely. When this happens you may require resins or even tooth rehabilitation or dental implants to replace the lost tooth.

Temporomandibular Joint Problems

Bruxism can also cause jaw joint problems such as inflammation of the muscles in that area, problems opening or closing the mouth, difficulty chewing or speaking, and even headaches, neck or ears.

According to a study published in the Journal of Applied Oral Science psychosocial factors may be related to this type of temporomandibular disorder. Stress, anxiety or even situations like the one we face due to pandemic by Covid 19 or coronavirus, can contribute to the development of this problem.

How can bruxism be prevented or treated?

The health of our teeth is essential. It is necessary to remember that our teeth do not regenerate and are necessary in our life, not only in our aesthetic part, as they are responsible in our eating and even speaking processes. For this reason, we recommend that you do periodic check-ups with your dentist to prevent serious harm such as that associated with bruxism.

The problems related to bruxism can be detected early in your dental appointment, where the specialist can observe if there are wear on the teeth or problems in the jaw joint. You may require a splint or dental guard to prevent further wear or fracture of the teeth and further trauma to the jaw.

As well as protectors, there are other treatments such as: relaxation therapies and application of hot packs and ice in the joint area, medication such as muscle relaxants, physical therapy.

What to do if I have a tooth fractured by bruxism?

If a tooth has been fractured, you should request a dental appointment to evaluate the damage to the tooth. The revision will need to be done and the tooth may need to be x-rayed. Depending on the severity of the fracture, it may be treated with a resin and in other cases the tooth may have presented greater damage and should be rehabilitated or extracted.

In the event that the tooth definitely needs to be extracted to replace the lost tooth, a dental implant.
