Swollen gums: a risk factor for Covid complication

Having an inflamed gum is a risk factor, which can complicate Covid 19 disease.

According to studies published in the scientific journal Journal of Clinical Periodontology, have periodontitis or chronic inflammation of the gums, may increase the likelihood of hospitalization or admission to the ICU, by contracting Covid 19. Studies also indicate that there is a highest chance of death from Covid.

What is Periodontitis and why is it a risk factor?

Periodontitis is the chronic inflammation of the gum that generates bone loss and therefore tooth mobility, it is a disease with a multifactorial cause that produces tooth loss

The first phase of this disease is mild and is known as gingivitis. It can be detected by changes in gum color and bleeding from inflammation. If the disease is not treated in this initial phase it becomes chronic, turning into periodontitis.

Periodontitis can cause:

  • Swollen, red, tender, and bleeding gums.
  • Bone loss.
  • Mobility and loss of teeth.
  • Pain when chewing or by clenching your teeth.
  • Bad breath or halitosis.

Chronic inflammation can lead to a systemic condition, that is, it begins to affect other areas of the body. For this reason, periodontitis has been associated with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

When we contract Covid 19, an inflammatory process also occurs. If there is already an inflammatory process in our body, produced by periodontitis, the virus can attack our body more strongly.

All of the above, in this time of Pandemic we recommend attending the dentist more frequently.

How to prevent periodontitis?

To prevent periodontitis you must maintain excellent health of your gums and teeth:

  • Perform your oral hygiene: at least 3 times a day with a good brushing, use of dental floss, interdental aids and mouthwash. We recommend Bucoplack products, for daily and natural use (ask us how to get it).

  • Change your toothbrush regularly: at least every 3 months.

  • Eat healthy: with a balanced diet.

  • Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and sugars.

  • He attends the dentist periodically: at least every 6 months.

In these cases, it is always better to be safe than sorry. If you program your professional hygiene appointments with your dentist, it is possible to detect any disease in your gums and teeth in time.

When the inflammation is chronic it is necessary that you request an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible, to start a treatment.
