Should a dental implant be put in for every missing tooth?

When several teeth are lost it is not necessary to put a dental implant for every missing tooth. There are several treatment options according to the number of teeth that have been lost.

It is not possible to speak of a single treatment, because each case is different. For this reason, it is important that the implantologist can review your particular case, make a complete diagnosis with tests, and thus propose the best alternatives to perform the treatment.

However, it is possible to talk about some cases and the types of recommended treatment. We present you below different dental implant treatments, depending on the number of missing teeth.

When a single tooth has been lost

If a single tooth has been lost, the treatment that was previously recommended was a dental bridge. The problem with a bridge is that wear must be done on the teeth on the sides in order to fix it.

In this case the best treatment today is a dental implant. The implant is a screw that is inserted directly into the bone of the missing tooth, replacing its root, without using the neighboring teeth. And, to that screw, the prosthesis or crown is fixed, which is the visible and aesthetic part of the tooth.

You can learn more about the difference between a bridge and a dental implant in our article: If a tooth is lost, it is best to put a dental implant.

When 3 or 4 teeth have been lost

When you have lost 3 or 4 teeth in a row, it is not necessary to put a dental implant for each one. With 2 implants teeth will be enough to restore them.

In this case, the implants are placed at the ends and a fixed prosthesis is used replacing the 3 or 4 missing teeth.

When all the upper or lower teeth have been lost

When we lose an entire arch of teeth, it is not necessary to put an implant for each tooth. It is possible to use between 4 and 8 implants or more, to replace the entire arch, depending on the type of treatment that best suits the patient.

The number of dental implants to use in these cases varies according to many factors such as bone state (density, height and thickness), the bite (or occlusion), and the general health of the patient.

Currently there is a specialized treatment for restoration of full arches called All or 4 or All on Four. All on 4 is a special treatment for those who have a partial or total loss of teeth that have no bone (edentulous). With this treatment the entire arch is recovered using only 4 dental implants. You can see more information about the treatment on our website.

In any case it is important to remember that, when we lose teeth it is necessary to restore them to regain the functionality of the mouth. The aesthetic factor is also relevant but, When we do not replace lost teeth, serious problems can be generated in the bone, the bite and in the other teeth.

Currently the best solution to restore lost teeth is a treatment supported by dental implants. This option is the most durable and safe to regain the correct functionality of the teeth, especially when chewing.
