Dental implants when there is no bone

Putting dental implants when there is no bone: it has a solution. A bone graft or sinus lift treatment is necessary before inserting the implant.

Why is the bone lost or weakened?

The bone can weaken for a number of reasons. We mention the two most common causes:

  1. Do not replace a lost tooth with a dental implant: the bone in that area weakens.
  2. Suffering from chronic inflammation of the gum or periodontitis: it is a disease that ends up reabsorbing the bone by bacteria and causes tooth loss.

Why is it important to have bone to be able to put a dental implant?

A dental implant is a screw that replaces the root of the tooth. Both the tooth and the dental implant need strong support to remain fixed in the mouth. This support is the BONE.

If you have low bone mass, the dental implant will not have a good fix. The force and pressure exerted when chewing will cause the treatment to fail.

For all the above, if you do not have an optimal bone mass, it is necessary to rebuild or regenerate the missing bone. For this, bone graft or maxillary sinus elevation is used, as required in each case.

How to put a dental implant when there is no bone?

As we mentioned before, in order to put a dental implant in cases where there is bone loss or deterioration, there are two solutions:

Bone graft

This type of treatment seeks to increase the bone mass that has been lost or weakened, in the area where a dental implant will be placed.

For this treatment, bone, whether synthetic (artificial), the patient's own or of animal origin (bovine), is inserted into the area to be restored. After inserting it, the integration process is expected for approximately 6 months, before placing the dental implant.

Maxillary sinus lift

The maxillary sinus are 2 cavities located under the eyes. When there is loss of the posterior molars of the maxilla, the maxillary sinus descends and bone loss occurs. In this case, the bone graft and elevation of the Schneiderian membrane in the maxillary sinus is a good solution.

This procedure can be performed in one or two phases depending on the case. If it is carried out in two phases, an integration time of 6 to 8 months, on average, is expected before placing dental implants. If it is performed in one phase, the implant will be placed in the same surgical act in which the sinus lift with bone graft is performed.

Before any treatment, it is necessary for the specialist to review your case and perform the necessary tests to determine what may be the best solution.

The solution will depend on the height and thickness of the bone where the dental implant will be inserted and the general health of the patient.
