Dental Implants in Diabetes Patients

What is the diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by the presence of high levels of glucose in the blood.

People with diabetes have high blood sugar levels because their body cannot move sugar from the blood to muscle and fat cells to burn or store it for energy, and / or the liver produces too much glucose and secretes it in the blood. This is because:

  • The pancreas does not make enough insulin.
  •
  • Cells do not respond normally to insulin.
  •
  • Both of the above reasons.

There are several types of diabetes, but the most important are two:

Diabetes type 1.

In 15 % of the cases is inherited, the predisposition to develop this disease that is characterized by an autoimmune reaction of the organism, so that it attacks the cells of the pancreas in which insulin is produced.

It usually begins during childhood and adolescence, although it can affect people of any age.

The usual symptoms are:

  • Polydipsia: abnormal thirst with dry mouth.
  •
  • Polyuria: increased in urine.
  •
  • Polyphagia: excessive hunger. You may also have other signs and symptoms such as tiredness, fatigue, sudden weight loss, and sometimes blurred vision.
  •
  •

Type 2 diabetes (Mellitus or adult diabetes).

It is produced by factors such as age, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, inadequate diet and family history. In this case, the body can produce insulin, but its action does not have the necessary efficiency (insulin resistance) and this leads to the accumulation of glucose in the blood, this type of diabetes can remain asymptomatic for a long time before is diagnosed, if it is not treated properly it can have important health consequences, such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular accidents, peripheral neuropathies, amputation of one or more limbs.

Wounds can heal slowly, and in some cases infectious diseases also occur on a recurring basis. In patients with this type of diabetes, insulin must be injected daily, these require continuous monitoring with different types of exams.

Treatment must be complemented with a specific diet and regular physical exercise. However, they can lead completely normal lives.
