Stains on teeth appear for many reasons, ranging from lack of adequate and frequent oral cleaning to diseases that cause teeth to change their natural color.
In case we have stains on the teeth we must pay great attention to the color of the stain because according to this we could respond in a different way to the coloration.
We hope that the information that you can find in this publication will serve as a basis for understanding the reasons why your teeth have stains and, in the same way, you will know what you can do to avoid or eliminate these stains.
Extrinsic Stains (External)
They appear on the surface of the tooth, are usually light or dark brown in color and do not usually pose a risk beyond aesthetics and demonstrate a lack of dental hygiene. They can be produced by
In this type of stains, the aesthetic part of the tooth is affected, if they are not removed properly and in due course, the stains could fully penetrate the enamel, passing through the dentin and remaining embedded in the latter. This type of stains in its earliest and superficial phase can be eliminated with daily brushing and conventional dental toothpaste. The most resistant stains or having them for a long time will require a greater effort, becoming necessary (as the case may be) a treatment in consultation with a Dentist.
Intrinsic Stains (Interiors)
These types of stains are those that form on the inside of the tooth, they are usually white or gray in color and their shape is linear on the tooth enamel. They can be produced by
This type of stain can be obtained by the use of rinses with a high content of chlorhexidine, consumption of drugs high in iron. In children they usually appear where the gum begins due to chromogenic bacteria. This type of spots also appear due to diseases such as periodontitis, which is an infection and inflammation in the gums.
Gray spots may be due to trauma (intrinsic stains) in the mouth. They can also appear due to the consumption of certain antibiotics, diseases, lack of tooth development in childhood, necrosis of some tooth (tooth nerve death).
Microorganisms and bacteria in the mouth (bacterial plaque) that appear due to the accumulation of food debris generate yellow stains on the teeth.
The phenazine It is a pigmentation that occurs especially in children and adolescents, it is secreted by the accumulation of bacteria and fungi in the gingival area, this area is located right where the gum begins.
Failure to brush properly and frequently after consuming food, beverages, sweets, wine or tobacco generate these types of stains.
Although it might be thought that the white color in the teeth is synonymous with healthy teeth, white spots on the teeth can be generated by excess fluoride from an early age. Demineralization due to the presence of cavities is also a reason for white spots.
LIf carrying out an adequate and frequent cleaning we see that the external stains do not disappear, the recommendation is always to go to the Dentist for a proper dental cleaning by means of ultrasound. This procedure should remove surface stains on the teeth.
When the stains are intrinsic (interior) and are very difficult to remove, we have another option and they are dental veneers, are fine porcelain prostheses that are glued to the anterior surface of the teeth, providing a natural and attractive appearance.
Dental veneers are another of the methods that we can use to achieve a whiter and brighter smile: these are porcelain sheets that are placed in front of our teeth and that are used in case there are intrinsic and difficult to remove stains .
