Tips and recommendations for the hygiene of a removable dental prosthesis

If you have reached this publication, it is very possible that even when your doctor has explained the procedure to you, you still have doubts about how to have good hygiene of your dental prosthesis. At Premium Implant Network we want to give you tips and recommendations so that you can be calmer.

It does not matter if your dental prosthesis is made of metal, acrylic, silicone, upper, lower, all teeth or few teeth, it is very important to clean it at least once a day, to increase the life of the dental prosthesis, avoid the formation of tartar, the appearance of bad odors and that it loses its whiteness and shine.

With what to clean the Removable Dental Prosthesis?

The dental prosthesis must be cleaned with a liquid soap that is neutral. The neutral soap does not have artificial colors or flavors, this means that after washing the piece and placing it in the mouth, the experience is not unpleasant.

Commercial toothpastes contain abrasives such as calcium carbonate that help keep natural teeth free of plaque or dental tartar, tooth enamel is very resistant and can withstand these abrasives.

The prosthesis is sensitive to these abrasives and with prolonged use it can reduce not only the life time but also the original polishing of the prosthesis, thus becoming more porous and causing food residues to remain in these pores and with time it will stain colors. dark and also has a bad smell

With what should I brush the Removable Dental Prosthesis?

For a proper cleaning of your dental prosthesis it is important to have a special toothbrush. These brushes have 2 faces:

  • The flat cut cleans the denture surface and teeth.
  •
  • The conical brush is for cleaning small or hard-to-reach spaces.

It is also important that you have a brush with soft bristles and a small head for cleaning your gums, tongue and natural teeth.

If you are thinking But I no longer have natural teeth, why brush? Not having teeth does not mean that you should not wash your mouth every day, you can still have food residues. If it were the case of having a wound and not caring for it, this wound could lead to a serious infection.

Can I sleep with the removable dental prosthesis?

Being a removable prosthesis there may be movements while you sleep and less known cases where patients accidentally swallow their dental prosthesis. The prosthesis could also come out of your mouth and end up crushing it with your body

Another reason for not sleeping with the prosthesis is that it can cause a disease called subprosthetic stomatitis, It is a painful and uncomfortable inflammation of the soft tissues such as mucosa and gums where it is supported by prostheses. The body can generate rejection and allergies to the material with which the prosthesis is made, and a solution may be to stop using the prosthesis until the body stops feeling it as a threat or to the point of changing the prosthesis for another of another material.

That is why we recommend that before sleeping, you clean your prosthesis and store it in its box, case or where you normally keep it and it is safe.

If the case is that you are not going to spend a night at home, or you are going to be sharing with someone else and you simply want to sleep with the prosthesis on, the recommendation is NO you go to bed without first cleaning your prosthesis and your mouth and teeth.

Should I use baking soda with lemon to clean the removable dental prosthesis?

It is not an obligation nor is it necessary to do it this way since there are effervescent tablets of commercially known brands that you can get in pharmacies that are used to clean and disinfect dental prostheses. The main compound in many of these lozenges is citric acid and baking soda.

If for some reason you do not want to buy these tablets or you simply cannot afford them, you can make your own disinfectant liquid at home with these 2 components, lemon and baking soda.

This method is exclusive for removable dental prostheses, it should never be used on natural teeth or directly in the mouth.

  1. Squeeze enough lemon into a glass to cover the denture,
  2. in another glass you add 1 or 2 small tablespoons of baking soda.
  3. We place the prosthesis in the glass that contains the sodium bicarbonate
  4. Add the lemon juice to the glass that contains the baking soda and the prosthesis.
  5. Wait between 3 to 5 minutes, remove the prosthesis and wash it with water.
  6. You can repeat this procedure 1 or 2 times a week.
  7.

How often should I go to the Dentist to check my Dental Prosthesis?

Well here it is a bit uncertain and depends a lot on what your dentist has told you. But in ¨general¨ cases you should attend your dental prosthesis control every 6 months. Due to the normal wear and tear of the prosthesis, it is recommended to attend these appointments in a timely manner, in them the dentist will be able to check the correct functioning and physical appearance and in this way avoid reaching the point where the prosthesis is no longer functional and you have to wait a long time before you can use another.

Can any dentist make me a dental prosthesis?

We have heard cases of patients who for different reasons have gone to Dental Technicians for them to place their prostheses. In Premium Implant Network we do not have absolutely nothing against of the Dental Technicians, but they do not have the capacity and do not have to attend directly to the patients, since they do not know the protocols that the patients must follow in their entire process (before, during and after the placement of the prosthesis).
